"Be like the rocky headland on which the waves constantly crash. It stands firm, and round it the seething waters are laid to rest."
- Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
This beautiful metaphor describes ideal emotional resilience - remaining stable and unmoved while chaos swirls around us. Like a rocky headland that neither fights the waves nor is worn down by them, we can learn to maintain our inner equilibrium despite external turbulence. The headland doesn't resist the waves or try to stop them; it simply remains itself, solid and dependable. Eventually, even the most agitated waters settle around its steady presence. This is the goal of Stoic practice - developing such inner stability that our peace and strength become a calming influence on the environment around us.
