"Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too."
- Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Marcus uses historical perspective to understand both present challenges and future possibilities. Empires that seemed permanent - Egyptian, Persian, Greek - all eventually declined and fell. The same patterns of rise and fall, success and failure, creation and destruction repeat throughout history. This perspective serves multiple purposes: it humbles our current concerns by showing their temporary nature, it provides wisdom by revealing recurring patterns in human affairs, and it offers comfort by demonstrating that difficult periods always eventually pass. Understanding history's cycles helps us neither despair during hard times nor become overconfident during good times. Everything changes; nothing lasts forever; this too shall pass.
