"The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing, in so far as it stands ready and firm for the unforeseen attack."
- Marcus Aurelius
Meditations
Marcus uses this athletic metaphor to describe the proper stance toward life's challenges. Dancing is beautiful and graceful but requires predictable music and coordinated movement. Wrestling, however, demands constant readiness for unexpected attacks from any direction. Life is more like wrestling - we must maintain balance, stay alert, and be prepared to respond quickly to unforeseen challenges. This doesn't mean living in paranoid anxiety but rather cultivating the mental and emotional flexibility to handle whatever comes. The wrestler's stance is one of grounded confidence: stable enough to not be easily toppled, yet agile enough to respond effectively to any situation.
