Stoic Concept
Antipatheia
The absence of destructive emotions and passionate attachments.
Antipatheia is often misunderstood as emotional numbness, but it actually represents freedom from destructive emotional patterns that disturb our peace and cloud our judgment. It's not about feeling nothing but about not being controlled by unhealthy emotions like rage, envy, excessive fear, or desperate attachment. The person with antipatheia can still feel appropriate emotions but isn't overwhelmed or driven by them. This emotional balance allows for clearer thinking and more effective action.
