Stoic Concept

Autarkeia

Self-sufficiency and independence from external circumstances.

Autarkeia is the Stoic ideal of inner self-sufficiency - having everything necessary for happiness within oneself. This doesn't mean isolation or refusing help from others, but rather not depending on external things for our essential wellbeing. True autarkeia comes from developing virtue and wisdom to such a degree that we remain content and purposeful regardless of external circumstances.
