Stoic Concept
Boulesis
Rational desire or wish based on correct understanding of the good.
Boulesis is healthy wanting that flows from accurate judgment about what is truly good - primarily virtue and wisdom. Unlike epithumia (irrational desire), boulesis is balanced, sustainable, and aligned with reality. This kind of desire motivates us toward worthy goals without enslaving us to outcomes. The person with well-developed boulesis wants what is truly valuable and can pursue it without anxiety or attachment, maintaining freedom even in their aspirations.
