Stoic Concept
Chara
Genuine joy arising from virtue and right action.
Chara is the deep satisfaction and joy that comes from living according to virtue and wisdom. Unlike hedone (pleasure from externals), chara is sustainable, reliable, and enhances our character rather than diminishing it. This joy springs from knowing we're living well, acting rightly, and growing in wisdom. It's available to anyone regardless of external circumstances because it depends on our choices rather than our situation. Chara represents the positive emotional life of the virtuous person.
