Stoic Concept
Preferred Externals
Things that are naturally preferable but don't determine our happiness.
Preferred externals are things like health, wealth, good relationships, and reputation that are naturally preferable but not essential for happiness or virtue. We can reasonably pursue these things without being attached to getting them or disturbed by losing them. This category helps us navigate practical life while maintaining philosophical perspective. We can work for good outcomes while remaining free from dependence on them for our peace and self-worth.
