Stoic Concept
Stoic Determinism
The belief that all events follow from prior causes according to natural law.
Stoics believed that everything happens according to fate and natural causation, yet maintained that humans are responsible for their choices and character. This apparent contradiction is resolved by understanding that our choices, while determined, are still genuinely ours and reflect our character. We are responsible moral agents within a determined system, like notes in a symphony that are both fixed and meaningful.
