Stoic Concept

Epithumia

Irrational desire for things we judge to be good.

Epithumia represents unhealthy desire based on false judgments about what is truly good. This might include desperate craving for wealth, status, pleasure, or other externals. The problem isn't wanting these things moderately but being driven by irrational passion that disturbs our peace and leads to poor decisions. The Stoic works to transform epithumia into healthy preferences that don't control their happiness or behavior. It's about freedom from compulsive desire while maintaining appropriate motivation.
