Stoic Concept
Hedone
The emotion arising from the false belief that external pleasures are truly good.
Hedone is the emotion of elation or excessive pleasure that comes from wrongly judging external things as genuinely good for us. While natural pleasures can be enjoyed moderately, hedone represents the kind of emotional high that makes us dependent on external sources for happiness. The Stoic aims to enjoy pleasures without being enslaved by them, finding genuine satisfaction in virtue rather than constantly seeking external sources of pleasure. It's about emotional balance and true contentment.
